早睡早起,植物的头等大事
还是查尔斯·达尔文,最先注意到了叶片与茎干的夜间节律性运动,他明确提出这就是植物的“睡眠运动(sleep)”[2]。在他之前,法国物理学家Jean-Jacques d’Ortous de Mairan于1720年,也观察到了含羞草的叶片在黑暗条件下仍能节律性的闭合。但达尔文比他多研究了68种植物,发现叶片的昼夜节律运动是普遍的。他推测,植物叶片到了晚上合拢睡觉应该是为了抵御夜间的寒冷气温[2]。
