Scripps Research | Shenzhen Bay Laboratory Chemical Biology Institute is recruiting globally to fill multiple tenure-track assistant professor positions in Shenzhen, China. The area of research is open but should fit within the broad scope of chemical and biological sciences, with emphasis on the interface between them in the context of disease and drug discovery. 

 

Scripps Research | Shenzhen Bay Laboratory Chemical Biology Institute, Shenzhen, China, is a newly established partnership between Scripps Research and Shenzhen Bay Laboratory (SZBL) (see reports at:

Qualified candidates should have a Ph.D. or M.D. degree, with postdoctoral training or industrial experience, and an outstanding record of research that demonstrates originality at addressing significant questions. Successful candidates are expected to establish an active research group and pursue a program of high-quality research that will result in breakthrough discoveries or technology advancements. 

 

Scripps Research | Shenzhen Bay Laboratory Chemical Biology Institute welcomes applicants of all nationalities and will provide an internationally competitive start-up package and salary. Successful candidates will also receive a joint appointment from PKU Shenzhen Graduate School. The initial appointment will be 5 years and renewal is based on reviews by an international committee.

Scripps Research is joining forces with Shenzhen Bay Laboratory to establish a joint Chemical Biology Institute (see announcements at: https://www.scripps.edu/news-and-events/press-room/2019/20191127-szbl-collaboration.html and https://www.szbl.ac.cn/news_detail_en.aspx?detail=19746&parm=948). Within this institute, the Division of Translational Research will consist of preclinical drug discovery and early drug development expertise and capabilities for small molecules, peptides/proteins and antibodies. Our state of the art facilities will include high throughput screening (HTS) and diverse small molecule libraries (1 million), with capabilities for medicinal chemistry optimization, peptide/protein and antibody engineering, PK and in vivo efficacy studies. Researchers will work closely with scientists from Calibr at Scripps Research, as well as collaborators within the Shenzhen Bay Laboratory and other institutions, to translate biomedical basic discoveries into innovative new drugs that will impact the major diseases of unmet need. 

 

JOB SUMMARY 

 

We are seeking talented PI/Director level managers in Disease Biology, Medicinal Chemistry, in vivo Pharmacology, Peptide, Protein and Antibody engineering to lead a dynamic, interdisciplinary team of research associates and post-doctoral scientists as well as coordinate CRO efforts to develop new therapeutic approaches to unmet medical needs through early stage translational research. Partnerships with various for-profit and non-profit organizations will be a key component of the workflow, and work will be published in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES 

 

• Responsible for developing and leading key research projects in alignment with the Institute’s mission and goals 

 

• Provides successful project and team leadership of both in-house and/or CRO resources 

 

• Uses in depth literature search skills to generate new project proposals and maintain a pipeline for successful pre-clinical candidates 

 

• Works with senior management to identify and develop new relevant and viable research projects and directions 

 

• Authors research reports, generates scientific presentations and manages research timelines 

 

DECISION MAKING 

 

Independently designs, executes, interprets and reports results of work. Additionally, oversees consistency and accuracy of results and documentation. Exercise judgment to make decisions and solve problems independently. Escalates issues and risks that significantly affect timelines. 

 

COMMUNICATION 

 

Strong communication skills that enable leadership of and coordination with colleagues, CRO personnel, and management teams to direct projects effectively. 

 

SCOPE AND COMPLEXITY 

 

Principal Investigator is independently responsible for leading overall strategic as well as day-to-day research activities. Works collaboratively with teams in coordination of group goals. Works on extremely complex problems and requires the ability to adapt quickly and evaluate intangible variables. Exercise judgement in developing methods, techniques and criteria for obtaining results. 

 

SUPERVISION OF OTHERS 

 

Manages scientific staff related to applicable projects. May have oversight of CRO relationship working to ensure goals and timelines are met accordingly. 

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS 

 

• Candidates must have Ph.D. in a pertinent scientific field with 7+ years of related scientific experience and 3+ years of supervisory experience 

 

• Strong bench skills and a proven track record in area of specified science 

 

• Demonstration of highly successful project execution across disease areas using in-house and/or CRO resources leading to preclinical candidates for further clinical development 

 

• Demonstrated skills in managing, mentoring and supervising team members; commitment to diversity and inclusion 

 

• Highly motivated, creative, and devoted to project goals 

 

• Impeccable attention to detail, and excellent ability to perform hands on experiments, research, design, and organize project designs and maintain detailed documentation 

 

• Able to contribute in a meaningful way to scientific discourse 

 

• Prior involvement in drug discovery and early development in pharma settings are highly preferred 

 

• Highly motivated, creative, and able to maintain excellent documentation of their work including writing grant applications and third-party partnership plans

HTS engineer 

 

Position Overview: 

 

Automation Engineer/head of High Throughput Screening 

 

Shenzhen Bay Laboratory is seeking a talented Automation Engineer/Head to lead the Automation and High Throughput Screening group. The individual would be responsible for running, managing and maintaining laboratory automation as well as biochemical and cell-based assay development for HTS. A successful candidate will have experience in lab automation, screening and assay development. 

 

Specialization in one or more the following is highly desirable: cell-based and biochemical assay development, High Content Imaging and Flow Cytometry or programming in Java, C# or related languages. We are looking for someone who truly enjoys working with technology, so candidates with recreational interest in programming, auto repair, Arduino devices, etc. may be an especially good fit. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

 

• Operate, maintain and troubleshoot uHTS System 

 

• Assay Development, Optimization and miniaturization 

 

• Troubleshooting screening issues related to both automation and assay conditions 

 

• Continual improvement of technologies through innovation 

 

• Data analysis of high throughput screens. 

 

Qualifications and Experience: 

 

Requirements 

 

• MS or PhD degree in engineering, biology or a relevant field with 2-5 years of experience in Lab Automation and Screening. 

 

• Assay Development of Biochemical and cell-based assays 

 

• Experience running and troubleshooting Lab Automation including but not limited to liquid handling, acoustic dispensers, multi-mode readers, compound transfer devices, etc. 

 

• Ability to troubleshoot equipment problems and perform quality testing. 

 

• Working with teams to transition an assay from the bench to a high throughput screen. 

 

• Able to collaborate proficiently and communicate effectively with colleagues and management 

 

• High level of self-motivation. 

 

Experience in one or more of the following is highly desirable 

 

• Programming in Java, C#, JavaScript and other languages 

 

• Programming and operation of the Labcyte Echo and Access system, Agilent Bravo, Tecan Freedom Evo, BMG Pherastar multi-reader, larger multi station-based systems such as HighRes and GNF Systems. 

 

• High Content Imaging and or Flow Cytometry 

 

• Cell based and biochemical assay development 

 

• Statistical Analysis and/or Design of Experiment 

 

Compensation and Salary: $100k to $150k/y 

 

Purpose of the initial working period at Calibr, Scripps Research: 

 

• Learn the cutting-edge technologies in uHTS systems 

 

• Help design the state of the art ultra HTS systems that fit the best need of the new institute in Shenzhen 

 

• Work with the vendors from various suppliers to assemble and integrate the uHTS system 

 

• Build-up first-hand experience in daily operation and maintenance, data acquisition and processing, and troubleshooting and service.

Compound Management Lead Candidate JO 

 

The Position 

 

This position will require the successful candidate to start a Compound Management group from the ground up. A strong background in Compound management is required. He/she will establish a workflow for sample request and fulfillment, select appropriate lab automation and software, receive requests for samples, track, coordinate, and perform order fulfillment and distribution of both solids, solutions, and plates to scientists. 

 

Education and Experience: 

 

• Bachelors degree in Engineering, Biochemistry, Chemistry or related field 

 

• 5+ years experience the in a compound management, high throughput screening and/or lab automation 

 

• A proven track record managing a group. 

 

• Experience with liquid handling equipment and other laboratory automation technology systems. Experience with the span-8 liquid handlers (e.g. Tecan Evo, Hamilton Star), acoustic dispensers, plate transfer devices and related experience. 

 

• Proven track record of evaluating, selection, implementation of lab equipment and software and the generation of SOPs. 

 

• Experience with LIMS and inventory management software. 

 

The activities of the Compound Management Group include, but are not limited to, those shown below. Applicants should have experience in all the following: 

 

• Manual handling of all incoming compounds; including powder weighing, dissolution, and plating. 

 

• Handle logistical aspects of compound management; including sample inventory tracking and storage and ensure accurate record keeping. 

 

• Responsible for uploading data to compound registry, curation of registry, and managing data workflow. 

 

• Prioritize and communicate timelines; provide progress updates to the group. 

 

• Weighing and preparing compounds and solutions 

 

• Arraying compounds from vials to microtiter plates 

 

• Re-array compound plates 

 

• Maintaining and tracking compound library database 

 

• Provide support for sample receiving/sorting services, plate generation, screening, inventory maintaining and QC support using various liquid handling instruments for Compound Management. 

 

• Provide liquid handling performance monitoring services and other laboratory equipment maintenance per customer SOPs. 

 

• Keep accurate data entry of all activities in Tracking Database. 

 

• Provide operational flexibility by cross-training across all job functions with other team members. 

 

• Carefully follow customer SOP’s, orders, and schedules. 

 

Proposed salary and benefit: $70k-100k/y 

 

Purpose of the initial working period (6 months) at Calibr, Scripps Research: 

 

• Help assemble the key compound libraries for ultra HTS that fit the best need of the new institute in Shenzhen 

 

• Get trained with the appropriate lab automation and software 

 

• Familiarize with the workflow of sample requests and fulfillment, track, coordinate, and perform order fulfillment and distribution of both solids, solutions, and plates to scientists and CRO vendors 

 

• Build-up first-hand experience in daily operation and maintenance, library maintenance and replenishment and troubleshooting and service.
